HAVELOCK, NC, February 2, 2018 — It’s an epic story of Native Americans, early European settlers, Civil War battles, Space Shuttles, and so much more. The history of Craven and Carteret counties spans hundreds of years and is host to amazing stories that most have never heard.
Craven County native and Historian Eddie Ellis will enchant and educate attendees to “Rediscover Your Future” as guest speaker at the Eastern Carolina Aviation Heritage Foundation annual fundraising gala on Friday, February 23 at 5:30 p.m. Held at the Havelock Tourist and Event Center, the celebration will offer fresh insights, incredible tales, a bit of archeology, and even a few recent discoveries about our area that may surprise even long-time residents.
You’ll be impressed with the facts you learn about Havelock, New Bern, and other cities nearby. For instance, were you aware the spot where Miller’s Landing Club now sits is where, in 1862, 60 Union ships landed for the Battle of New Bern? The area now occupied by MCAS Cherry Point used to be home to thousands of Neusiok Indians. Many of their trading paths became routes for our state’s major highways. The base also served as an alternate landing site for the Space Shuttle in the 1980s. The runways at the air station were widened from 200 to 400 feet to make them accessible as an emergency option.
